it's really odd for me to name or claim the work I make. this entire website doesn't have my english name as I find it odd for people who know me to talk about what I make to my face. I've only ever put my name given to me in another language on here.

had the privilege to be born and raised on Oahu, an island in Hawaii. having known solely the season of summer the entirety of my existence provoked me to seek the messiest, most malleable medium I could access--clay.

I've been exploring the medium of clay for over a decade as a means to express, introspect, and explore the complexities and inevitability of transience ubiquitously found in life, our bodies, and clay.

later on in life in 2008 when I gained access to a camera I snapped some photons of what seems very minute and common in life. catching these moments in a photo has allowed me the chance to stop and notice what I'm missing in the bustle of life.
in 2013 I discovered a quiet, anywhere, anytime, accessible form of self expression and thought developing medium—writing. this medium is very cool. there’s no need to bake my writing in a kiln for it to be finished nor do I need to take a photo of words. all that’s needed is a sharp tool to create markings or indentations on a surface I can store portably. I don’t need gas to bake it or a charging cord to charge the camera, just eyes to find a writing tool.

obbo studios was founded by me, a human person that was named theresa shum at birth. I explore the transience of the moment and the nature of life observed and filtered through the molding of my hands in clay, a click of a finger to capture photons, and typing/writing of my hand muscles on digital and mostly paper surfaces. This site provides any being of this earth and beyond of past creations and will feature future works that will be for observation, and/or judgement.
